ceramic dog by S. Judson Wilcox in the MetroHealth art collection – foto by Smith
This is old artist friends home week on the Smith blog.
I was over at MetroHealth Hospital today trying to get my body fix jumpstarted since I’m now covered by Medicare (I turn 65 next week) and saw this ceramic dog sculpture by my old art installation partner and great friend S. Judson Wilcox. From 1983-85 we lived in the same warehouse downtown Cleveland and collaborated on some of the finest art installations this city’s seen, according to the newspapers and local TV.
The dog’s wearing a beanie propeller hat and a long neck scarf . . . a bit of whimsy amidst the hospital sadness. It’s maybe 18″ tall. It was hard to photograph because it has a white glossy glaze finish and is in an overly-bright glass bridge way between the two hospital buildings.
Tomorrow I’ll blog my sculpture from the same collection. Both his and my sculptures are from 1991.

Dear Judson:
Celebrate 40 years of Arts/Industry with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in 2014!
During 2014, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center wants to honor the alumni of our Arts/Industry program in an Arts Center-wide exhibition spanning the program’s history, an extensive publication, alumni reunion, and outreach through educational programming. As we plan the events, we ask that you participate in an online survey to update your contact information, share your stories, and be considered for possible exhibition opportunities: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ArtsIndustry.
In addition, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center invites you, as an alum of the program, to a reunion event in Sheboygan during June 2014. Details of this event will be forthcoming.
This landmark anniversary is an opportunity for the Arts Center to get re-acquainted with former Arts/Industry artists-in-residence, to consider the long-term impact this program had on their artistic careers, and to give consideration to possible future engagements. The exhibition, to span all twelve galleries, will feature art made in the residency program, primarily drawing from the Arts Center’s and Kohler Co.’s collections. We are presently exploring the idea of inviting selected artists to share new work in a series of smaller exhibitions and/or the catalogue.
Your responses to the survey will ensure that information in the exhibition, the book, and in press releases, is correct and as thorough as possible. We also invite you to submit images of your work then and now, of Arts/Industry work in progress, and of you during the residency.
Thank you for your time and for sharing your stories. We hope to see you at the Arts Center and Kohler Co. for the reunion in 2014!
Best regards,
Ruth DeYoung Kohler
